You hear about it all the time. Your friend had their jacket stolen. That kid in your English class suddenly had his iPod go missing. Maybe even you personally had something special taken away from you. And all you can do is wonder "Why?". What really motivates someone to steal in the first place?
This year, stealing is a big issue on campus, wreaking havoc on far too many innocent people. Throughout the overwhelming abundance of utter discontent and understandable anger, someone has yet to arrive at a solution.
We will never be able to put an end to stealing altogether. However, there are some ways you can protect your belongings and try to decrease your chances of being the next victim…
1. Never place your backpack, bag, purse, etc out of view.
2. If you are not able to carry your belongings yourself, make sure they are locked up. (This means always locking your PE locker no matter what.)
3. Regardless of teachers’ approval, it is sometimes wise to leave certain favored belongings out of sight during class in order to decrease the opportunity for it to be stolen in the first place.
Aside from these recommended precautions, there are still many more ways to decrease the rate of thefts as a whole. Be a role model yourself. Don’t carry on this pointless trend. What will you really gain from it? Also, try to positively influence others. If you witness something, try to speak up. You may really help someone.
Even though these guidelines aren’t foolproof, they certainly decrease your chances of having your precious items taken from you. Let’s all hope that eventually, the stealing will decrease and we will no longer have to wonder whether or not it’s safe to freely use our personal belongings at school.
